Artist's Description

Tyneham village in Dorset, England was a tiny, isolated farming village. Just before Christmas 1943 the village was commandeered by the War Office for military training for the war effort, and the 225 residents were given just 4 weeks notice to leave their homes. They were told that they could return after the war.

When the war ended they were not allowed to return, and in 1948 compulsory purchase orders were issued on the village properties, and the residents were never to return. Tyneham became a ghost town, used only for military training purposes.

Following years of protest the Ministry of Defence agreed to allow access at certain times of the year, and some restoration work has begun. The churchyard is once again allowed to be used for burials, and the tiny schoolhouse which housed on average 16 pupils of all ages has been restored to how it would have looked during the 1940s. The bookcase in this picture is as seen in the schoolhouse.

That has always stuck with me, and I try and remember it each time I look through the viewfinder. Thank you for visiting, and I hope you find something here you like. Please enjoy your...
