A Victorian navvy enjoys a few minutes respite from his backbreaking work to enjoy his refreshing tankard of ale.
The term navvy, or navvie, was short for navigator, and was applied to manual labourers who worked on major civil engineering and construction projects. The term originated in late 18th century Britain when numerous canals were being built. The man in this image is a member of the "Ragged Victorians" re-enactment group.
The Ragged Victorians are an award winning living history re-enactment group, re-creating the hardship, squalor, and poverty endured by the lower social classes of Victorian England. They regularly feature at historical sites in the UK.
Originally from Manchester in England, but now live near the foot of the Pennines, regarded as one of the most scenic areas of outstanding natural beauty in Great Britain. It's a great place to live for a photographer, but as you can see from my galleries I like to venture further afield occasionally. I have been a photographer for over 30 years, and always remember the best piece of photographic advice I was given. Some years ago I worked with a very elderley and wise photographer and he said to me on one occasion "you are looking but not seeing".
