This striking sculpture is in the pretty village of Roughlee in Lancashire, England. It is dedicated to the memory of wealthy local landowner Alice Nutter, one of ten unfortunates accused of witchcraft during the infamous Pendle Witch trials. Their principal accuser was a nine year old girl, and the trial took place at Lancaster Castle on 18th August 1612. After being denied access to lawyers or the right to call witnesses, the accused were hanged at Gallows Hill, Lancaster on 20th August 1612.
