Public concert life began in Vienna when Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (translated in English to Society of Friends of the Music) was founded in 1812 by Joseph Sonnleithner, general secretary of the Court Theatre in Vienna. Until then concerts were restricted to aristocratic homes. It's official charter drafted in 1814 states that the purpose of the society was to promote music in all it's facets.
This magnificent concert hall was commissioned by the society after previous locations had become too small. The venue is now the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Originally from Manchester in England, but now live near the foot of the Pennines, regarded as one of the most scenic areas of outstanding natural beauty in Great Britain. It's a great place to live for a photographer, but as you can see from my galleries I like to venture further afield occasionally. I have been a photographer for over 30 years, and always remember the best piece of photographic advice I was given. Some years ago I worked with a very elderley and wise photographer and he said to me on one occasion "you are looking but not seeing".
