Description
Preserved steam locomotive Merchant Navy class 35018 British India Line is seen crossing Ribblehead Viaduct on the scenic Settle-Carlise line, on a typical windswept Pennine afternoon in Yorkshire, England.
The viaduct stretches for 440 yards across Batty Moss and consists of 24 arches, each spanning 45 feet (13.7m).
Construction of the viaduct lasted from 1870 - 1876 with a workforce of approximately 2.300 "navvies", who lived with their families in shanty towns which sprang up around the construction site. During construction over 100 people were killed, either through construction related accidents, or disease which spread through the shanty towns.
