New build steam locomotive 60163 Tornado hauls "The Robin Hood" special through Tupton, Derbyshire on 13th August 2016.
Tornado is the first steam locomotive to be built in England for over 50 years, and was built via private donations at a cost of three million pounds. The idea was conceived in 1990 and construction began at Darlington, England in 1994, and building work was completed in 2008. The locomotive was named "Tornado" as a tribute to the Royal Air Force pilots who flew the Panavia Tornado combat aircraft during the Gulf War of the early 1990s. The locomotive nameplates carry the insignia of RAF Cottesmore.
Tornado is a class A1 locomotive incorporating new safety and performance features from the original design, which no doubt would have been introduced had steam traction not been discontinued. The original A1 class was designed by Arthur Henry Peppercorn, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway, and introduced in 1945. The original number...
