Preserved steam locomotive A4 class 60009 Union Of South Africa making a dramatic entrance to the station at Bury, on the East Lancashire Heritage line in England. The cold and frosty weather adds to the dramatic smoke and steam effects.
Originally from Manchester in England, but now live near the foot of the Pennines, regarded as one of the most scenic areas of outstanding natural beauty in Great Britain. It's a great place to live for a photographer, but as you can see from my galleries I like to venture further afield occasionally. I have been a photographer for over 30 years, and always remember the best piece of photographic advice I was given. Some years ago I worked with a very elderley and wise photographer and he said to me on one occasion "you are looking but not seeing". Terrific photo, the lighting in the smoke plume is excellent LF
David Birchall replied:
Thank you Michaela.
Yvonne Wright
Great shot, as if right from the Dickens times👍
David Birchall replied:
Thank you Yvonne. Not quite Dickensian though as that particular class of locomotives was built between 1935-1938. The railway purists would jump on me if I didn't point that out LOL !
Juergen Hess
Gorgeous!
David Birchall replied:
Thank you Juergen.

Terrific photo, love the way the engine is emerging through the steam, congratulations on your features
David Birchall replied:
Thank you very much Michaela.
Kathryn Jones
A superb composition! Well do I remember those days of my childhood, when steam was the driving force with only a few electric trains. Also, one of my great aunts lived in Bury during the closing years of her life, though I never went there in person.
David Birchall replied:
Thank you Kathryn. What a coincidence that your great aunt lived in Bury. Not a particular scenic town, one of the many north of England industrial mill towns that sprang up during the industrial revolution. However some great scenery around and about, and this heritage steam railway goes passes through a lot of it. A regular outing for myself and my little grandson.

David Birchall replied:
Thank you very John for featuring my image.
